Holy moly is the school year here already? If you’re looking to support a preschooler or kindergartner in this big transition, here are some of our favorite books. These also make great gifts, especially for family members who want to show some socially-distanced love!

The Buddy Bench is so effing good. This picture book is about a group of kids figuring out how they can include the friends who are on the sidelines of the playground. If your shoes have holes, if you speak another language, if you stutter, it doesn’t matter, you belong in the game! But how can kids know when someone wants to play, without them saying it? A buddy bench! Ugh, friends, I cannot tell you enough about how good this book is. It’s available on Amazon and Bookshop.
Danbi Leads The School Parade is one of our all-time favorites. About an immigrant girl, Danbi, who doesn’t know the language or the food or the rules of her new school. She perserveres, and makes friends, and ends up leading a parade! Danbi is available on Amazon and Bookshop. A new Danbi is coming out soon and I CANNOT WAIT!
Go Get ‘Em Tiger! is the new Oh The Places You’ll Go. If you haven’t heard, take a look at Dr. Seuss’ racist undertones (mostly not under, actually). So instead of giving that classic, gift Go Get ‘Em Tiger! Your littles will love the bright colors and you’ll love the more inclusive message. On Amazon and Bookshop.
I Walk with Vanessa: A Picture Book Story about a Simple Act of Kindness is a sweet, wordless book about a child choosing to walk with a new friend who is being bullied (likely for her skin color). You’ll need tissues for what happens next. Available on Amazon and Bookshop.
Jack (Not Jackie) is a delightfully illustrated book about a sister going through the process of understanding that her sibling identifies as Jack, not Jackie like when they were born. A great book about supporting people in their identity. Jack (Not Jackie) is on Amazon and Bookshop.
Maddie’s Fridge is beloved over here! About two young friends, one of whom has enough food and one who doesn’t. Can Sophia keep a promise to her friend, but also help make sure she and her family get enough food? Bonus points for featuring two solo moms. You can find Maddie’s Fridge on Amazon and Bookshop.
We’re Going to Be Friends by the wildly talented Jack White will be a quick favorite for music-loving parents. You’ll recognize that tune immediately, and your kiddos will be drawn in by the magnetic illustrations. On Amazon and Bookshop.
There are so many more! What are you favorite back to school books for the little ones?
