I Walk With Vanessa is a heartstrings tugger! In this wordless book by Kerascoët, Vanessa is new at school. A mean kid says something to her on the way home and bam! the feelings. We don’t know what was said and it doesn’t matter. Another kid (who presents as female) saw it happen and tells her friends. She thinks about it all night and get an idea. She runs to Vanessa’s house in the morning and holds her hand as they walk to school together. And then – get the tissues – one by one the other kids come to hold hands until they literally surround Vanessa in what feels like the hundreds.
This book is a powerful reminder to kids that they can do important things and make meaningful choices. And it is a reminder to me that I can do a better job of walking with Vanessa.
